Ghana Beyond Accra

I have finally overcome the fervent melancholy of a post 4 week holiday to Ghana. Maybe it was the first signs of spring finally breaking through the deluge of rain and grey (who knew the sight of a daffodil could cure a mild case of seasonal associative depression). Whatever the reason, taking so much time to reflect on my trip to Ghana has made me realise how Accra centric most of the Year of Return festivities were. I love Accra, but I found the constant commotion of the city to be quite tiring and a little chaotic at times. What’s worse that being stuck in traffic on your way to BloomBar or Firefly. Besides, sometimes you just want to escape the stifling city and trade it all in for a change of pace.

So, with that in mind, here are a few alternatives for when you want to escape the hustle and heat of Accra traffic.

Where to Stay…

Royal Senchi Hotel 🛌🍸🍴

If you’re in search of a little luxury, the 4*’d Royal Senchi hotel offers an in-house spa, impeccable cocktails and a sublime live band, and boat rides along the the River Volta. It’s a far more relaxed atmosphere than Accra, and delivers on luxury without compromise.

Sweet Garden Hotel 🛌🍸🍴

Perfect for day trips to the Ashanti regions. Lush green grounds and the perfect spot to get that oh so perfectly tropical picture.

Mac-Dic Royal Hotel 🍸🛌

Only 2 hours away from Accra but such a huge change of pace. Koforidua offers the vibe of a bigger city without the stress of big city. The Mac-Dic Hotel had great service and an excellent (and completely empty pool), definitely worth a visit for a relaxed city break, away from the city.

What to do…

Afadjato 🌄

Mount Afadja
Everyone who knows me knows I hate the outdoors, however being provided with the chance to climb Ghana’s highest mountain was an opportunity too good to resist. Make sure you set off early for this one as it will get your heart rate pumping.

ObourTabiri 🌄

A much smaller mountain, but no less daunting. It’s a steady 2-hour climb, that provides breath taking views of Koforidua at night. More importantly however, you can drive to the top and avoid walking for 2 hours.

Wli Falls 🌊

This was probably my favourite activity I did during my time in Ghana. A short hike to waterfall. This is one place that I can definitely say pictures do not do it justice. Bring a swimsuit and a change of clothes because once that cool clear water washes over your feet, you will not be able to resist taking a dip.

Boti Falls 🌊

A shorter hike than Wli, but no less beautiful. But this is definitely one for the rainy months to see the waterfall in all its glory.

Sajuna Beach Club 🍸

For those in search of a change of scenery but want to keep the party (after parte) going, then visit the Sanjuna Beach Club. Honestly, spending a mid afternoon with a drink in hand swaying to Shatta Wale is a fantastic way to enjoy the country

Where to Eat…

Street Food 🍴

In Ghana, street food is King. You’re never more than a hand wave away from some truly delicious morsels, so take full advantage of that. Pro tip, check which fruits are in season before you head out. I was there during mango, starfruit and pineapple season and I would highly recommend buying some roadside mango and starfruit, getting out of your car and devouring every last bite in the sunshine.

Akosombo Continental 🍴

If you’re heading towards the Volta regions, the Adomi Bridge station delivers a mouth-watering selection of street food. From freshly fried shrimp, One-Man-Thousand and Aboloo to spiced mussel’s and snails there’s really something for everyone. If you’re after a fresh delicious meal at an incredible price with amazing views then make it a point to visit the Akosombo Continental Hotel for some grilled Tilapia.

Ghana has a lot to offer, travelling beyond the capital opens up so many more gemstones that get forgotten in the buzz of partying and the rush city life. So, take some time and venture beyond Accra, you may just find your own little gem that’s worth more than gold.
