Year of Return

If you are familiar with diaspora twitter, you will be well aware of the on going excitement around the ‘Year of Return’ and ‘December in Ghana’. And like so many others, I shall be celebrating both of these events this year.

It’s been over two years since I was last in Ghana. Two years since I walked on red sand dirt roads, and ate Waakye by the road side, savoring every flavour and texture known to man kind in one mouthful. Whilst I have missed Ghana everyday, I also understand that I shall be travelling to Ghana in two guises. One as a child of the continent, feeling the warm familiarity of home once again. But also as tourist, eagerly experiencing much of this great nation for the first time.

Its easy to say that there is something truly wonderful about Ghana. Maybe it’s the borderline romantic disavowment of punctuality. Perhaps it’s the nations rich, and incredible history, or possibly the sheer warmth and depth of the people. Whatever the reason, Ghana has always been a destination that captured the heart of leaders like Maya Angelou, Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and Bob Marley. But this year Ghana has seemingly caught the attention of the world.

There is a palpable excitement around Ghana this year. Over one million visas have issued have been issued this year. With this many people choosing to celebrate with the Nation, it’s amazing that Ghana is helping break misconceptions long held about Africa.

And to that I say Many Happy Returns

xx

Sandra
